Active Living Centre
The U of M Active living Centre is a 100 000 sq ft, LEED Silver targeted facility. It features an entirely exposed steel structure finished up to AESS level 3.
A visually stunning and clean design was possible thanks to the use of steel. Rolled steel was used to create the round edges of the running track on the upper floor. Using steel allowed for large open areas to accommodate any layout required for gym equipment within the building.
Since AESS was specified for this project a high level of fit and finish was required. Our tolerances were cut in half, all sharp edges were ground smooth, welds needed the appearance of being continuous, all weld splatter needed to be removed and all of our connections needed to be approved by the architect.
